I've found that most people struggle with even knowing which direction they should even go. They find it even more difficult when they realize that to have success online most often means that you've go to have atleast a basic understanding of BOTH marketing and technology.... And, in my personal opinion, that's the single biggest reason new marketers, just like you, FAIL!
